NASA sent two refrigeration units to the ISS, designed to store imported perishable and fresh food from the hydroponic garden, as well as medicines.

Refrigerators already fly to the station aboard the robotic supply ship Cygnus NG-14. They will help astronauts to eat in orbit not only rehydrated food from the packaging.

Although the device, called FRIDGE, was developed by the University of Colorado at Boulder, it performs the same functions as ordinary terrestrial refrigerators, his design and internal systems are different. In addition to small in size, about the size of a microwave oven, in it wholly no rotating elements.

Unlike the terrestrial refrigerator, the space analog uses and another heat removal system, insofar as under microgravity conditions, the emitted warm air does not rise up and can cause overheating. therefore FRIDGE is equipped with system water cooling connected directly to the station, which will be dissipate waste heat and keep cool all device.

There are already refrigeration units on board the ISS, but all they apply for cooling temperature sensitive materials for experiments.

Previously, we also reported the creation of a lightweight multifunctional biomaterial to protect astronauts from radiation.
