A method of making plastic glass, durable as steel, was discovered
Scientists have found a way to make durable glass that can bend and even stretch without cracking.
Those who have ever dropped their smartphone on a concrete surface are familiar with the terrible sensations of time lifting it and assessing screen cracks. it due to the fact that the glass used now belongs to the oxide family. IN them atoms combine into a rigid network that does not allow plastic deformation.
but team A material scientist at the Rensselaer Polytechnic has found a way to make glass pliable and less brittle. FROM help molecular modeling scholars found that silica glass made by compressing silica nanoparticles, can stretch up to 100% without breaking.
They also found that increased ductility occurs when silicon binds to five oxygen atoms instead of four. Compression actually changes the structure of the material and it can deform. without cracks.
This the discovery was made by molecular modeling and the next step will be testing in a laboratory.
